Personality:
Without a proper introduction, Klaus is the last person on the planet you’d expect to have ever been proclaimed a superhero. He’s a shameless hedonist, selfish almost to the point of narcissism, and is so irresponsible and self-destructive in his search for the highest highs that it’s an honest wonder he’s still alive. He tends to speak without thinking - or rather what comes out of his mouth is largely his own stream of consciousness - and is part of the reason why much of what he says is dismissed by everyone around him.
He wasn’t always like this, though. According to excerpts from his sister’s exposé autobiography, “Klaus was so sweet and vulnerable as a boy. But Father experimented on him the most, and it changed him.” Being one of the seven special children that were adopted by eccentric billionaire Reginald Hargreeves meant he was born with a special ability. In Klaus’s case, he has the ability to see and speak to the dead. Unfortunately the dead usually appear before him in the exact state they died in, gaping wounds and all, and naturally this made him absolutely terrified of his own gift. His ability seemed to only draw spirits toward him, perhaps because they were seeking a way to communicate with the living, which made his fear worse. Attempting to “cure” him of this, Reginald would lock Klaus up in mausoleums for hours at a time, not letting him out until he deemed the young boy suitably unafraid. Naturally all of this backfired in a major way, setting Klaus on the path to a very messed up adulthood. He views his father as the very epitome of everything that is wrong with the Hargreeves family and deeply, openly resents him, to the point of celebrating the old man’s death.
At some point in Klaus’s teen years (supposedly around 13) he discovered that recreational drugs and, to a lesser degree, alcohol dampened his ability to commune with the dead. He jumped onto that chance immediately and proceeded to spend the next 15+ years in varying states of high and/or drunk. This naturally labels him as The Junkie, and his credibility with the family (let alone anyone else in his life) takes a nosedive. There’s a heavy implication that the other Hargreeves children start to believe that he never had any powers and has been making it up the entire time. Everyone has made it very clear to him that he is viewed as “useless,” a “disappointment,” and little more than a flamboyant man-child constantly trying to be the center of attention, and it has caused him to have some serious self-esteem and self-worth issues. The only one who continues to have any faith in him is his dead brother Ben, who he called back to his side shortly after his death, and has remained with him and acted as something of a moral compass for him since they were 13 years old. Ben is the only ghost that Klaus is not afraid of and does not try to block out with drug use or blasting music into his ears.
The deep-seeded trauma of his childhood has shaped much of how Klaus interacts with the world around him. He’s one of the few Hargreeves children who actively and openly acknowledges that it was indeed a traumatizing experience and that their cold adoptive father is largely (but perhaps not completely) to blame for it. Klaus is a survivor leading a hedonistic, transient lifestyle, relying on drugs, alcohol, sex, sarcasm, and humor to stay alive and as “happy” as possible. His relationships with people outside of his family are primarily sexual in nature, all short-lived and far between, with only one real exception. When he does love it’s done deeply and unconditionally, accepting them for both the good and the bad. This naturally applies to his siblings, whom he sees as fellow survivors of the Hargreeves torture chamber, and is happy to come to their aid when they ask it of him, now more than ever before.
Festering beneath all of that is a kind man who is genuinely just doing his best to make the most of a shitty situation. When he’s actually paying attention he can be very perceptive and intuitive, and shows deep concern for the well-being of his loved ones at all times. He is well aware of the fact that he makes a terrible role model and, despite any and all behavior to the contrary, would not wish his life and his choices on anyone else. And although change is terrifying and holding himself accountable for his poor decisions is the last thing he wants to do, he is slowly, reluctantly coming around to the idea that he has to. He’d just like for his siblings to be there to help him.
Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping:
Powers
Communing with the Dead - Klaus has always been able to see and speak with the ghosts that linger in any particular place or around any particular person(s). He can also call spirits of his choosing to appear before him for a chat, but seemingly only if they’re willing to do so. They of course still have free will and he cannot force them into anything against their will.
Channeling the Dead - By extension, Klaus is learning how to make the ghosts around him manifest into the world of the living in a way that’s more corporeal. This includes them becoming visible to the living and capable of interacting with the world as though they are still alive, but only temporarily. He will eventually learn that he can allow ghosts to possess him, though it is hard to say if there are any special circumstances involved in doing so.
Warping
Happy to make him only able to see and speak to the dead as usual, but channeling them into the world of the living is even more unreliable or downright impossible when and where convenient. Allowing possession will be absolutely off the table (unless beneficial to events, at mod’s discretion).
Abilities
Hand-to-Hand Combat - as a member of the Umbrella Academy, Klaus was trained alongside his brothers and sister in hand-to-hand combat so that they could be superheroes and someday “save the world”.
Reasonably Competent Gunmanship - Klaus was accidentally drafted into the Vietnam War via time travel shenanigans, and had to learn how to handle himself on the battlefield with standard military issue firearms.
Knitting - everybody has hobbies
Weaknesses
Barely Reformed Junkie - Klaus has only just started to truly sober up enough to use his powers competently, so the call of various recreational drugs and alcohol will still be able to get a strong hold on him if no one intervenes.
PTSD - the time he spent fighting a losing war in Vietnam and watching the only person he’s ever truly loved more than himself die in his arms has left its scars; occasionally loud, repetitive noises will start to sound like gunfire and missiles to him.
